As the calendar turns to 2025, we are excited to get practices started in the next few weeks! Looking at our rosters, it is exciting to see the number of new players signed up for the first time. We want to help you get started on the right foot, so take a look at these tips for new players:
Purchase Equipment. Make sure your player has all the necessary gear to get started. Starter sets for boys and girls are available through various online retailers. You can also check out our Hoover Lacrosse Buy, Sell, Trade group on Facebook for used gear. Check out these sizing charts to get exactly what you need!
Learn to cradle. Cradling the ball is an essential skill in boys and girls lacrosse. As they run the field, move around the opposing defense, and endure stick-checks during the game, cradling well allows a player to maintain possession. Cradling practice can be done indoors and new players should make it a regular part of their day. A cradle baby is a great tool to help develop your cradling skills. You can also make one at home!
Play Wall Ball. Another essential skill in lacrosse is passing and catching. Moving the ball around the field helps the team set up great shots. Wall ball is the best way to improve this skill and it can be done on your own! 10-15 minutes a day will drastically improve your player's passing/catching skills!
Bundle Up. Even though lacrosse is a spring sport, practices start in the winter. Make sure your players are geared. up for the cold weather part of the season!
Learn the Rules. There is a lot that lacrosse has in common with sports like basketball, soccer, and hockey. But lacrosse has it's own rules, field lines, penalties, and aspects that make it unique. Check out The Player and Parents Guide to Lacrosse to learn what you need to know to be a great player and a great fan!
